the global theme for world environment day 2015
the well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.
many of the earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. by 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we'll need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.
the world environment day theme this year as set by the united nations environment program is therefore "Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care."
living within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future. human prosperity need not cost the earth. living sustainably is about doing more and better with less. it is about knowing that rising rates of natural resource use and the environmental impacts that occur are not a necessary by-product of economic growth.
see how we're celebrating here in Boonah.

clothes swap 2014
We'll be celebrating National Recycling Week again this year with a community Clothes Swap at the Cultural Centre on Saturday November 8 between 9am and 1pm.
Held simultaneously with the Bookfest, another great recycling event, the Clothes Swap includes women’s, men’s, children’s clothing, shoes and accessories.
Bring along some clothes, shoes or accessories and it's free to swap, or only a gold coin donation to buy.
Upcycled bags will be available to purchase, and there'll be displays and demonstrations of some great upcycled textile ideas.
Local upcycler Anita Egginton will show visitors how easy it can be to sew shopping bags and library bags which can then be used to carry home ‘new’ clothes or books from the next door Book Fest. Anita is also demonstrating how to easily refashion men’s shirts into women’s summer tops.
Other demonstrations include local artist Sal Hart showing innovative weaving techniques to create bags from used baling twine via extra large French knitting devices.
There’ll also be a small suitcase rummage with lots of bargains to be had from a suitcase.
Clothes Swaps promote the perks of reuse and recycling and are great for the environment, but they’re also a fun and interactive way to refresh your wardrobes and cleanse your collections for free, making it a budget-friendly alternative to buying new.
Swapping just one suitcase (20kg) of clothes saves enough energy to run a TV non-stop for 1.7 years.
We invite people to participate and bring along a few items to swap, or just come and talk to us and learn more about the broader theme of minimising waste.
As well as the focus on clothes, it's a great opportunity to bring along things which BOSS collects for recycling initiatives, which include
We’ll also have information there on recent innovations in recycling, including where people can take household batteries, soft plastics and ewaste.
