World Environment Day Festival 2014

Boonah will be celebrating on Saturday June 7 at the Outlook, Boonah Ipswich Road, Boonah between 9am and 4pm.

In line with the UN General Assembly's decision to designate 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States, this year's World Environment Day will spotlight Small Island Developing States - a diverse group of more than 50 low-lying coastal communities or territories - and their unique development challenges and successes.

So this year's theme is the Small Island Developing States and Climate Change. Due to their small size and isolation, these small island states are highly vulnerable to risks of natural and environmental disasters, climate change and sea-level rise.
See the United Nations website for more information.

We welcome participants to focus on this theme for food, workshops, entertainment, artisan stalls etc.

Please contact Julie via email to express your interest in participating.

Please remember our focus on the environment, and our desire for a plastic bag free event.

clothes swap 2013

celebrating national recycling week, this year's clothes swap offers another great opportunity to update your wardrobe and clear it out in the process.

bring along your good quality women's, men's and children's clothes, shoes and accessories to swap for others.

it's all free when you swap, otherwise just give us a small donation.

there's no real rules or limits to what you can bring along or take away. if you bring something, then you're entitled to take a reasonable amount away with you.

Swapping just one suitcase (20kg) of clothes saves enough energy to run a TV non-stop for 1.7 years. (not that we're suggesting anyone has to swap 20kg of clothes :)

it's
all happening right next door to the Boonah Bookfest, another great recycling event. they'll be in the main auditorium, and we'll be in the heritage room.

you can also bring along any items that BOSS collects for recycling, such as old runners, corks, mobile phones and accessories. check the recycling register for more info.

it will be a great week for recycling !! hope to see you there.

Boonah’s World Environment Day Festival 2013

Boonah’s fourth World Environment Day Festival will once again showcase a huge array of exhibitors, workshops, demonstrations, art and performances celebrating and inspiring sustainable communities.

This free event is presented by the Boonah Organisation for a Sustainable Shire (BOSS), and is fast becoming one of BOSS’s premier events on the yearly calendar. It’s scheduled for Saturday 1 June at the Outlook, Boonah.

The festival has grown exponentially with a growing number of participants with something for everyone, from aquaponics to zumba, and even raw food, worms and tepees.

There’ll be live entertainment, free creative workshops, displays and demonstrations, quality organic food and local produce, loads of plants, artwork, native wildlife, recycling bays and so much for the whole family to get involved in.

The global theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations is Think, Eat, Save, an anti-food waste campaign. The aim is to encourage people to become more aware of the environmental impact of their food choices and empower them to make more informed decisions in sourcing, growing, preparing, preserving and disposing of food.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, one in every seven people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of five die daily from hunger.

BOSS President Sharon Murakami points out that the large methane emissions caused by organic waste going to our Scenic Rim landfill sites is of concern to many, including the local council. The optimum position is to limit the amount of organic waste in the first instance, but by dealing efficiently with food waste, it forms part of an eco cycle where scraps feed chooks or worms and compost is created for the food you can grow.
“World Environment Day is all about giving people a helping hand though demonstrations and practical application of how to make sustainable changes to their lives. It’s about sharing ideas, old and new, so if you would like to participate on the day as a stall holder, demonstrator or volunteer, please contact us,” says Sharon.

For more information or to get involved in the festival, please contact Julie via email
